Physical Education Programs and Curricula for Middle School:

Students in 6th-8th grades take weekely physical education trips to Balboa Park or the the Joan Kroc Center. Curriculum is tied closely with state standards and guides students toward age-appropriate physical fitness goal setting and skill building. Physical education units include basketball, volleyball, soccer, track & field, swimming, rock climbing, football, aerobics, and weight training. Students also learn core strengthening, flexibility, and endurance excercises and participate in regular goal setting and testing activities designed to improve fitness.

  • Fitness Skills

Students engage in brief fitness skill building three days per week. During this time they practice presidential fitness testing activities: push-ups, sit-ups, running, flexibility, and general fitness exercises. Each student works toward improving his/her personal best and setting new goals for the future. Skills practiced during this time tie directly with Fitness Fairs, Mile Fun Runs, and Kroc Center PE Units.

Special Activities for 1st-8th grades:

  • Mile Fun Run (1st -8th grades)

A mile course is set up on the grass area of Balboa Park. Children run laps until they complete a mile. Parents and teachers time runners and encourage everyone to do their best. This run is planned 3-times per year (fall, winter, spring). Students set a personal time goal for their run.

  • Fitness Fair (1st-8th grades)

Students rotate between fitness stations designed to develop overall fitness. Students are encouraged to set personal goals for each station and work toward meeting their goal. Fitness fairs are planned for 3 times per year.
