Kindergarten
The growth we can observe in our kindergarteners from September to June is profound! Children go from being able to write their names to writing stories; they move from basic letter recognition to being able to read words; their math skills expand from number recognition to being able to solve simple math problems.
Kindergarteners also enjoy connecting with “the big kids” in their Chapel Families: older students who help look after them during chapel and model attentive behavior during times of worship.

1st Grade
In first grade, we see our students' reading and math skills take off, a fact which attests to our rigorous and engaging curriculum. They also develop cursive writing fluency, a skill which many of them discover is impressive to friends and adults! They begin developing a deeper understanding of who God is and His love for them.

3rd Grade
By third grade, City Tree students are confident engaging in the many opportunities provided by the school to explore San Diego. They love doing P.E. at Balboa Park and lean in during field trips to Classics for Kids and the Civic Center.
They continue growing as artists, Spanish speakers, and musicians as they advance in each subject. Third graders also start learning about the building blocks of novels and are old enough to do special book-related activities—like creating a chocolate factory when studying Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

4th Grade
Fourth grade is an exciting year! Not only do fourth graders get a front row seat to California state history with a trip to Sacramento, they also participate in historically immersive activities like gold panning. Acting out history is a trend throughout the year as kids participate in projects like a living Wax Museum, where they play different world-changing characters.

5th Grade
Fifth graders begin stepping into leadership by reading books to their kindergarten reading buddies and setting an example to younger elementary students. Fifth grade is also a major step forward for budding musicians as they begin Band.
Students with prior instrumental experience can audition for the Advanced Band. If they make it, they’ll be allowed to attend the Advanced Band’s trip to Disneyland where students take a workshop coached by Disney Production directors and record a Disney score in a studio. Oh—and go on a few rides!
